Artist's Description

"Sacred Heart of Jesus" is a contemporary icon. The artist, C D Smith, has taken characteristics of traditional iconography (ie: the flat, patterned, shapes of color combined with shaded flesh tones) and interpreted them with realism and contemporary abstract painting. The figure of Christ he developed using the Shroud of Turin, Christ Pantocrator, and other ancient icons as reference. The Greek letters, Alpha and Omega, indicate the divinity of Christ, who appears to glow, as the "Light of the World;" and rays of His Divine Mercy pour forth from His pierced heart. Spiritual benefits associated with devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus are numerous.

About Smith Catholic Art

Smith Catholic Art

Smith Catholic Art started in 2001 as a response to St. John Paul II's 1999 Letter to Artists and the New Evangelization. It endeavors to answer the call to make visual the beauty and richness of the Catholic faith. "The mission is to create beautiful, contemporary, Catholic art." Art is an interplay with the Creative Spirit. Thomas Aquinas wrote that objective beauty has three components, integrity, clarity, and proportion. In fine art these translate: Integrity - the beauty in quality materials, authentic process, and workmanship; Clarity - the eloquence of idea and purpose communicated by the work; Proportion - good composition, or the well ordered relationships of visual elements."
